How Can You See God?

Carol McClain

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matt. 5:7

I sometimes think this Beatitude dovetails with the first of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20: 2: Thou shalt not have any gods besides me. And commandment number one segues into number two: do not make any graven image.

In today’s world, we are making God in our own image. We decide we’re pagan or non-heterosexual or not “in love” with our spouse any longer. We tell ourselves our god is fine with this. Our truth supports our feelings.

We forget that truth is a fact and immutable. Things don’t fall up. The sun rises in the east. Water freezes at thirty-two degrees. Because we think the opposite of the truth, doesn’t make it so. We’ve corrupted our hearts and worship ourselves.

If there’s only one God, then there’s only one way to find him.

Be honest with yourself.

Every Western faith claims the Bible as its holy book. Read it. See what God asks of us.

In Eastern faiths like Hinduism, they accept Jesus as one of many gods. If he is,  go to the text and see what Jesus says.

If you truly want God–you shall see him.
