Why Trust God

Why do I love roller coasters?

 

1. They’re safe. They’re designed by engineers who know (not people like me who would have a hard time engineering a box). They’re tested so no one would be hurt. Thousands of people have ridden the ride before me.
2. They take me places I could never go on my own.
3. They make me laugh and scream and laugh and shiver and laugh–even long after the ride ends.
4. They’re fun. They bring me joy.

All these rides–whether wooden coasters or loop-de-loop or indoors or outdoors or for children or not for children–have one thing in common. A long assent makes your heart pound in anticipation. There’s an interminable pause at the top of the hill. Then you plummet. The very first drop is the steepest.

Plummeting is the key.

If you don’t drop, you won’t have the centrifugal force to cant sideways on the rails or loop upside down. That initial descent creates the power to achieve everything the ride offers.

Trusting God Is Like Riding A Coaster

1. He’s safe. God engineered the world which works wonderfully. Millions of people have trusted Him, and He has delivered them all.  Psalm 121: 7-8: The Lord will keep you from all harm- he will watch over your life;  the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
2. He will take you places you couldn’t go on your own. Just read Isaiah 40: 31. “but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (My favorite ride at Dollywood just happens to be the Wild Eagle–appropriate, no? This ride has your legs dangling over nothing as you zip over treetops and tower over other rides. It’s smooth and fast and fun. I couldn’t fly on my own.
3. If we trust God, we will find laughter in our lives. Job 8:21 He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.
4. Walking with God gives you joy. Isaiah 55:12. “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”

If we trust anonymous engineers and theme park operators with our lives, how much safer are we with God?

Trust Him with all your heart. I don’t understand roller coaster engineering, but I trust it. I don’t understand the trials that plummet me like the universal downhill of a coaster, but I know my trials will power me through anything else thrown my way.
