Learn Your Weakness: Work With Them

by: By Carol McClain: @carol_mcclain

Friends started a small group with one of those fun character quizzes. In this one, our characteristics were symbolized by cute animals: lion, otter, beaver, golden retrievers.

I so wanted to be a beaver. They were industrious. Got things done. All business. That’s how I saw myself.

Shockingly, I came up as a golden retriever (my family’s favorite critter). This dog seemed goofy, loving, unproductive. The opposite of me–a beaver.

After thinking about it, the quiz was accurate, and two traits comforted me: goldens want to make people happy, and they’re lazy.

Now the last one would sound odd to be one that comforts. However, it opened my eyes to a characteristic of mine. I love to do things, but this body at rests, stays at rest. I looked back at all I’d done in my life and saw that I gravitated to the short-cut. As a perfectionist (in character, not skills), I condemned myself. Then I discovered it’s a fairly common characteristic of many people. Knowing that fact, took away condemnation (it’s not ME), and it gave me the tools to work to improve.

  1. I don’t hate working on church ministries–I just tend to follow the universal law of inertia: bodies at rest stay at rest.
  2. I don’t hate volunteering–I just follow the law.
  3. I’m a legalist–What can I tell you? I follow the law.

Work To Your Strengths. Strengthen Your Weaknesses

  1. You won’t spin your wheels doing what God has not called you to do. 1 Cor. 12: 5-6 (we have different gifts).
  2. You can strengthen the areas where you’re weak. When I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Cor. 12:10.
  3. You are perfectly made. God can use you warts and all. Ps. 139:14

Very good blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you advise starting with a free platform like
Wordpress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there
that I’m completely confused .. Any recommendations? Bless you!

I would go to blogspot and get a free platform there. Don’t go a paid route until you get your feet wet and know what your focus is.

Interesting. I’m the beaver with golden retriever a close second. So glad God uses us and grows us. Blessings.

Thanks for stopping by, Cheryl. Yes, we complement each other. Have no clue how to react with an otter.

Thank you, so much. It’s a lot to learn. I don’t know what I’d do if I had to design the whole thing.
